All of the exercises up to this point have been carried out in an open space, and there has been a tight transition between each step. The dog now faces a bit of an abrupt transition as he moves on to training involving the outside of a structure. But this is a very fantastic training phase to get the dog ready for further interior building scent training. The dog will learn to inspect the outside wall and foundation of different structures via repetition. Once again, this is a novel and very realistic experience for the dog. Since the air currents may alter the scent in a way that requires the dog to scrutinize it attentively in order to identify and track it, the difficulty of smell is heightened in these activities. You must thus carefully organize these activities. A spot of hiding for the scent and a dummy around its edge, where the dog may detect the odor, must be included in the building choosing process. For every activity in this training, you are only allowed to cover up one scent. The dog shouldn’t be forced to investigate an area where there has previously been a scent in order to avoid confusing him. ‘Smell’ will react as a consequence of this. A scent may penetrate a space and remain there for an indefinite period of time after the material has been removed, depending on a number of variables. As a result, a dog will become puzzled if he smells anything and doesn’t get rewarded. This may easily and swiftly lead to the dog losing interest in seeking out, detecting, and reacting to scents. The fragrance of the exercise should be carried toward the dog’s starting point by the wind and air currents while the first preparations are made. Additionally, the odor should be hidden in a way that promotes favorable odour availability and, thus, simple detection. This encourages the dog to thoroughly inspect such places and enables him to rapidly associate smelling along a building’s façade. The dog should be brought to the building’s corner and facing in the direction he is to inspect after you have set up an activity like the one described above. (The building’s exterior is inspected in a counterclockwise direction). The dog should be encouraged to quickly and thoroughly inspect the building’s exterior after completing the initial sequence. Encourage him to find and notice the scent, and if needed, help him collect the dummy from its hidden location. When the dog does these activities, he should be attentively inspecting the building’s outside; if he becomes distracted or starts to wander, he should be brought back to the building and encouraged to investigate further. Once the dog has successfully completed these basic activities, the distance at which it must search for the scent should be increased. Additionally, the scent should be sporadically hidden at different intensities, but never in a place where the dog cannot detect it and track its source. The dog should be prepared for the next stage of training when you have progressively raised the level of difficulty in the outside activities and he is doing well.
