Beverly Pereira Photography: courtesy of the photographer the architects interface architecture cleverly converts a tiny plot into a huge property utilizing split-levels… when interface architecture was challenged to create a luxury and modern dwelling inside a tight area, the bangalore-based business opted for vertical planning. This property spans two floors and a terrace, and it has not just four bedrooms but also a home theater, a jacuzzi room, and a family space. The total square footage of the home is 1,200 square feet. The team, which is known for developing dynamic spaces that revolve around the site’s context and climatic conditions, sought to use split-level planning across a built-up area of 3,250 square feet in order to better complement the physical and visual connection between spaces. The team was led by principal architect Vijay Raikar. As a result, we have the two-story building, the low-roofed garage stacked on top of it, public and private areas intentionally stepped up from one another to generate interest, and we are playing with fundamental rectangular grids, much like one would in a puzzle. One steps up into the dining room and kitchen, while one steps down into the gym and family rooms, along with other minor staggered areas such as the entryway, bedrooms, and restrooms. These spaces are positioned at splits of two feet. From a central open-well staircase that is finished in a metal and wood finish and is bathed in a pool of natural lighting through the skylight above, the play of levels is dramatically grasped. structural considerations are ably complemented by a neural material and colour palette, where whites and greys predominate in an ambience of textured wood and natural teak amidst italian marble and glass and metal inserts viz., an etched glass sliding door, glass railing, a metal pergola on the double-height terrace and a metal and wood decorative full-height installation that functionally doubles up as a railing and offers a striking visual connect. The luxurious areas of the house, such as the home theater and the jacuzzi, are tastefully contrasted with the rest of the house, with the result being an atmosphere that exudes an air of opulence. The use of mood lighting not only gives the house an appearance of being lived in, but it also works to complete the image by highlighting the strong architectural vocabulary.
