It was designed by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU. Wunderkammer des Brotes, also known as PANEUM, is the first wooden edifice to be constructed in free form! The customer information center and event forum for the company Backaldrin in Asten, Austria, is an iconic structure that consists of two elements: a box-shaped plinth building with foyer and event rooms that can be used for a variety of presentations, receptions, or workshops for up to 120 visitors, and the Wunderkammer des Brotes (Museum of Bread), a two-story freeform exhibition area floating on top of the plinth building. Both of these elements were meticulously planned. Cast-in-place concrete is used for the front of the square foundation building, while stainless steel shingles are used to cover the rounded timber framework of the museum. At the same time, a circular atrium that has been chiselled in the center that is bordered by a sturdy spiral staircase that encourages visitors to stay for a while and take in the goods that are being shown from a variety of views is the focal point of everyone’s attention. The stairway allows access to the two exhibition floors, which are where the artifacts are shown with the assistance of walls, tables, and cabinets that are incorporated into the design of the building. Additionally, it makes it possible to create eye-catching vertical displays that have the appearance of a chandelier, which contributes to the overall aesthetic appeal of the monumental structure. Both the self-supporting wood shell with its layers of cross-laminated timber and the natural light that pours in from above the atrium contribute to the interior’s raw aesthetic design, which is enhanced by the combination of these two elements. This type of building makes it possible to realize the free form and a high degree of prefabrication via the use of 3D CNC technology, which is precision-driven and reduces the amount of time that is normally spent on construction. As stated by Wolf D. Prix, Design Principal of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU, “3D plotting, 3D milling, and constructing with robots – it is the future of building.” This technological advancement represents a significant step forward in the field of construction. Wood and stainless steel, tradition and innovation, light and dark… the architecture of the PANEUM comes to life through its combination of opposites and draws its dynamism and fascination from its contrasts.
