The photographs were taken by masaya yoshimura and taketo nishikubo, and they were provided by niko design studio. The design company known as niko came up with the notion of “isana,” which is an abstract interpretation of the phrase “a modest cottage in the woods.” The plan, which is situated in Musashino City, Tokyo, is heavily influenced by the conventional belief of the owner, who is of Indian descent, to develop spaces for rent in conjunction with any new structure. This being the essential base, the row house that is 217 square meters in size has been cleverly laid out on various layers and spaces. It is spread out over three floors vertically and in a u-format horizontally, and it encloses a courtyard that serves as a buzzing community space among the owners and the tenants. The design consists of a series of tiny blocks, each of which has seven separate dwelling units. The courtyard contributes to the creation of a multi-purpose common area that encourages a variety of activities. The whole of the home commands attention with its robust masses and straight cuts, which are reinforced by floor-to-ceiling punctures with decks that merge with the flora outside. This brings the court and the top floor on the same level, nearly giving it the appearance of a tree house. The visible and acoustic barriers are lowered via the use of building materials such as wood and reinforced concrete, as well as through the regulated use of voids, which helps to create neighborhood fellowship. This has been received with a great deal of enthusiasm by the proprietor, as it gives him a sense of feeling alive and provides him with a sense of security to have people about him at all times. In spite of the fact that the outside of the home has a monochrome appearance, the inside makes use of vibrant colors in a creative manner. Each individual unit is built with varying levels, which not only enable the creation of functional niches but also preserve the spontaneity of the respective areas. This modest cabin, with its scattered but close-knit form, gives off the impression that it is the self that it might have envisioned!
