The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History: Additional Information Our museum was one of the first waves of natural history museums to open its doors in the United States of America in the year 1883. During this time period, it was naturalists like John Muir and Louis Aggasiz that initiated a national culture of preserving nature and educating people about science via hands-on activities. For the last 130 years, the museum has maintained this long-standing custom. The purpose of the museum is to encourage exploration, awe, and responsible care of the natural world that we live in. It imagines a community of inquisitive minds who are actively involved in the process of finding the natural heritage and cultural history that are present on the Central California Coast at the present time. In this area, the Museum serves as a catalyst for conservation and a valuable learning resource, making it possible for people of all ages to engage in proactive research.
