During the course of my career coaching practice, I often find myself advising clients that in order to attain success and fulfillment in their careers, they need follow two different pathways simultaneously. The question “you mean I have to work in two distinct occupations at the same time?” is one that they will always ask. Not at all; it is not what I believe. About illustrate the parallel routes I’m referring to, here they are: What ever work you happen to have at the moment, make sure you do it properly and do it well. Give it your very best effort. Contribute your most valuable abilities. bring about a significant change for the organization. Be a true professional in the way that you handle your work. 2. You are required to handle your career in the same manner as a true professional. You need to give some consideration to, plan out, and put into action your career throughout the course of time. It is necessary for you to never stop developing and improving your credentials. Your network has to be continuously expanded, your abilities need to be improved, your visibility and credibility need to be increased, and you need to be ready for the next role. It is not sufficient to just get a job offer, “put your head down,” and do your duties. You need to get your mind on straight and pay attention to the culture of business that is going on around you. If you want to take advantage of fresh chances, you need also “keep your eyes and ears open.” Specifically, this is an example of “compartmentalization.” In this scenario, you split your work-brain into two sections: the first portion is where you concentrate on doing exceptionally well in your present position, and the second section is where you simultaneously work on advancing your career and searching for a new position. Some of my customers have inquired whether or not this constitutes “disloyalty” to the existing job. Oh, no, I don’t believe that. There is no doubt that loyalty is a beautiful quality; yet, it ought to be saved for members of one’s family, close friends, and cherished pets. It is important to remember that businesses in today’s world are not afraid to lay off employees when they are trying to reduce expenses or “raise shareholder value.” Therefore, where is the loyalty of the employer? As an additional point of interest, I noted earlier that you consistently provide your best work and add value to the organization that you are employed by at any given moment. The question “but how long will I have to do this?” is one that I often hear from customers after I have successfully persuaded them that they must follow these two parallel courses. There is no doubt that the response is “forever!” The management of your career is not something that you undertake either sometimes or on a temporary basis. It’s not only while you’re in between employment that you spend time working on career management. In point of fact, if you want to build and maintain a successful career, you need to make it a habit to engage in career management over the whole of your working life. The phrase “the firm owns your job, but you control your career” has been attributed to a certain individual. The most astute and successful individuals are aware of this, and they always behave in accordance with it. When it comes to managing your career, who else is doing it if you aren’t doing it yourself? your superior? what is your manager of human resources? one who recruits? nope. not even your trainer for your profession. You alone are the only one accountable for the management of your professional career. Taking complete responsibility is required for this, and you will need to be able to adjust and change your course of action as you go. Even in the most favorable of working conditions, you are not only doing one job but two jobs at the same time. In the same way that a train travels down two tracks, your professional life will go more quickly and farther if you persistently follow the two parallel opportunities that were shown before.
