Ar. Jean Verville offers a home architectural installation that was made for two individuals who are passionate about contemporary art as part of his second installation that mixes art, architecture, and domesticity. As the second of three installations in the series, IN2 incorporates a creative experimentation that takes place in a cottage in Montreal that dates back to the 1950s. In light of the fact that the homemakers are art and culture enthusiasts, Jean extols the combination of art and daily life in a proposition that calls for a significant amount of engagement from the users. Volumetric assemblages and visual breakthroughs, contrasts and tensions, scale games, and trompe-l’oeil are some of the elements that contribute to the architectural intervention’s ability to obscure the interpretation of places. Optical illusions that oscillate between reality and abstraction are produced by the antagonism between black and white. These effects are characterized by bidimensionality that borders on three-dimensionality until the boundaries between the two concepts dissolve. The inhabitants of this visual environment are provided with a daily opportunity to participate in the experience that Jean provides by addressing the joy that is given by building. This architectural journey, which is characterized by whimsical touches that unload the intervention of the iciness and seriousness that are frequently associated with contemporary architecture, calls for an experience that is completely altered by illusion, and this is done for the delight of the owners of the building. The architect is interested in the ways in which the relationship between the arts and architecture might be hybridized, as well as the influence that this hybridization can have on the process of architectural production. A series of study visits in Japan, with a particular emphasis on “Art House Projects,” led him to a meditation on the creative experience inside building, which he continues to explore. A wide variety of materials, including wood, lacquer, paint, granite, ceramic tile, and mirror, are used in the construction of this residence, which spans an area of one hundred square meters. Jean Verville, together with the assistance of Stéphane Gimbert and Francois Bodlet, is providing assistance with this project.
