BERTIE BIALEK ELLIOTT’S GIFT TO THE MONTEREY SYMPHONY ENDOWMENT IS BEING HAILED AS A LANDMARK CONTRIBUTION.

For more than three decades, Bertie Bialek Elliott has been a member of the Monterey Symphony and has been actively involved with the organization. He has worked in a variety of positions within the organization. Additionally, before to the beginning of the 73rd season of the Symphony, Bertie took the choice to contribute $2.4 million to the endowment fund of the Symphony. This move ensures that the institution will have a prosperous and healthy financial future. The creative and administrative vision of the organization will be supported by these endowment monies, which will be utilized to sustain the organization. The BERTIE BIALEK ELLIOTT ENDOWMENT is the designation that has been given to these funds by the Symphony in recognition of the remarkable generosity that Bertie has shown. The financial stability of the organization has been significantly improved as a result of this transformative gift as well as a bequest that was received earlier this year from the Margaret Anderson Renaissance Trust. Nicola Samra, the Executive Director of the Symphony, said that it is impossible to put into words what the significance of this donation is to the Symphony. It is because of Bertie’s generosity that the discussion on the longevity of the Symphony has been reframed. The thoughtfulness and generosity of this gift is beyond my comprehension, and I cannot express how thrilled I am about it. The feeling was mirrored by Lee Rosen, the President of the Board, who said, “Bertie and I have known each other for almost 30 years, and throughout that period, her dedication to the performing arts in our community has been unshakable.” We are overjoyed that her optimistic outlook on the future of the Monterey Symphony resulted to the donation of this gift, which will make it possible for the Symphony to continue to perform its outstanding symphonic performances and to cultivate our youth concerts for many years to come. After having a number of talks with the leadership of the Symphony, Bertie felt motivated to offer the donation. She expressed her happiness by saying, “I am very thrilled to be able to provide this present at this moment.” I am overjoyed to be able to contribute to the growth of an organization that I have been a member of for such a significant amount of time. In 1947, the Monterey Symphony was established with the purpose of providing services to the various communities that are located on the Monterey Peninsula. These services include a subscription series at Sunset Center in Carmel and a youth education program called Music for the Schools that has a wide reach. The Salinas Symphony will make its return to the city during the 2018-2019 season with two youth performances that will reach close to three thousand kids. In addition, the Symphony will perform six youth performances at Sunset Center, which will allow them to reach a total of 4,500 pupils. All students in the third grade of the Monterey Peninsula Unified School district and all students in the fifth grade of the Salinas Union School District are offered the opportunity to take part in the program offered by the Symphony. The Non-Profit Alliance of Monterey County recently presented the Symphony with an award for Outstanding Non-Profit Organization. At the beginning of the 73rd season of the Monterey Symphony, which is titled Sound Waves, on October 20th, 2018, the world premiere of a commissioned piece composed by Alex Berko, who is just 22 years old, will take place. Additionally, Berko spent a week in residence at the Glen Deven Ranch in Big Sur, which was the location of the work that was commissioned in collaboration with the Big Sur Land Trust. Franz Schubert’s ninth Symphony, titled “The Great,” will also be performed on the program.
