Arrive, the up-and-coming The design and architecture firm Punch Architecture, which is based in Las Vegas and also has offices in Denver, Los Angeles, and New York City, was given the responsibility of transforming the Highball Lounge into the Better Sorts Social Club. This club is a glamorous cocktail-forward, elevated-food concept that better fits with Nine Zero’s concept of blending the history and tradition of the city of Boston with the luxurious contemporary design and social aesthetic of today’s finest four-star hotels. The whole interior design was entrusted to Punch Architecture, which is more often referred to as just Punch. Additionally, Punch was responsible for fabricating a part of the new lounge’s furnishings. From the time of conception to the completion of construction, the project took around 18 months for the 3,200-square-foot area. “We wanted it to be a little unique, fun, and funny, but yet sophisticated,” says Zak Ostrowski, one of Punch’s three partners along with Drew Gregory and Clemente Cicoria. “We wanted it to be a little bit on the playful side.” “We wanted it to appeal to the Boston Brahmins era, which was a more affluent time period, but still being relatable to a younger audience.” Not only does it provide upscale drinks and cuisine, but it is also a venue where you may visit after a game at Fenway Park or after a game played by the Celtics. Ostrowski stated that they desired to achieve a balance between the traditional social club, which is characterized by its dim lighting, dark wood panels, and stateliness, and a more contemporary and upscale cocktail lounge, which is characterized by its open and airy atmosphere, brighter lighting, and contemporary furniture. Additionally, they wanted to align themselves with the new style of Nine Zero, which encompasses a combination of contemporary elegance and a tribute to the rich heritage of Boston. The design idea of Better Sorts, according to him, is “a homage to the golden period of classic spirit bars with its subtle sexiness, mischievous sensibility, and enigmatic sensuality.” The interior includes rich and warm American Black Walnut wood walls and flooring, which contrast with moody burnished dark green plaster colors, Nero Marquina marble, weathered leathers, textural sea glaze green tiles, exotic yet subtle wallpapers, dark and mysterious antique mirrors, and sultry lighting throughout the space. The materials also include weathered leathers. There are hand-crafted walnut and ambrosia maple tables with metal and burl inlays (designed and made by Punch), which are gently resting on colorful vintage Persian rugs. The custom furniture pieces are made of rich leathers, soft velvets, and jewel tone colors. These tables are beautifully complemented by the jewel tone colors. Better Sorts’s interior design is characterized by quirky photographs, a combination of recycled beautiful art deco and regency pieces made of handblown glass, crystal, and brass, and a variety of other elements. From Ostrowski’s perspective, “It was a wonderful project.” We were able to make use of a material palette that combines well with the makeover of the hotel since it is both luxurious and comfortable. There were a lot of different people participating in the design process, which made it a really enjoyable and collaborative experience. In addition to this, we wanted to maintain an open mind and the flexibility to absorb the Boston surroundings. An AIA award was given to Punch for the design of the Jackrabbit restaurant at The Duniway Hotel in Portland, Oregon, which was designed by celebrity chef Chris Cosentino.
