This will be done via an international competition, and the submissions will be made electronically. The Mumbai City Museum, also known as the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, is one of the most important cultural institutions in India. It is also the oldest museum that exhibits the history and culture of Mumbai, and it is currently in the process of developing a new and dynamic identity for itself as a cultural hub in Mumbai. Although its original building, which has since been beautifully restored (it also won the 2005 Unesco asia pacific heritage conservation award of excellence, the highest international award in this field), dates from the late 19th century and is considered a masterpiece, a rare combination within india of palladian architecture with high victorian interiors, its latest international associations – with the guggenheim lab, moma, and fondazione zegna, italy – and its regular calendar of engaging seminars across the country The additional facilities will make it feasible to hold events such as traveling international exhibits, which were previously difficult to do in the original historic building. This will allow for a broader range of activities to be carried out. Malcolm Reading Consultants, an architectural consultancy based in London that specializes in heritage master-planning and the selection of contemporary designers, is in charge of managing the competition on behalf of the museum. They are inviting competition entries from multi-disciplinary creative teams that have expertise in contemporary design and landscaping due to the fact that the museum stands in one of the few green spaces in south mumbai. The competition will be launched in December 2013, the shortlist will be announced in late January 2014, and the winner will be chosen in early April 2014, and it will be divided into two parts with a fast-track timeline. Collaborations with local practices will be encouraged. At the conclusion of the monsoon season in October 2014, it is planned to begin the site preparation process. The new building is anticipated to be between 8,000 and 10,000 square meters in size, with 85,000 to 110,000 square feet of floor space. It will house new galleries and facilities, such as an interpretation center, a library, an archive, conservation facilities, as well as a new museum shop and café. A temporary exhibition space that is up to international standards and has the capacity to hold large-scale touring exhibitions will be located in the new wing’s heart, which will also house a permanent gallery showcasing contemporary Mumbai. The permanent gallery will focus on significant milestones in the city’s development and highlight its cultural accomplishments.
