On January 11, 2018, in Monterey, California – It is with great pleasure that the Monterey Museum of Art (MMA) announces a comprehensive schedule of events, including exhibits, talks, pop-up dinners, tours, seminars, and fundraising events, all of which will center on the most renowned female artists from California and the Central Coast. What is it about women that the concept of creative brilliance is so seldom extended to them? Within the context of a series of exhibits showcasing the trailblazing work of California women artists spanning more than a century in terms of style, medium, and viewpoint, the MMA places the question to the forefront of the spotlight. According to Stuart Chase, the Executive Director of the Museum, “We have some outstanding work by women,” but the amount of their work that is included in our collection is only approximately twenty percent. We believe that by acknowledging the contributions of women artists, both from the past and the present, we will be able to contribute to the formulation of an inclusive vision for the future. E. Charlton Fortune, an impressionist who was bold and free-spirited in the early 20th century, and Kim Campbell, an abstract expressionist, are just two examples of the women artists who have been exhibited this year. Not only are they “as good as the men,” but some of them have also blazed new trails in areas where no man has gone before. Take notice that the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) on Pacific Street will be closed from February 5th to March 14th, 2018 in order to undergo gallery improvements.
