The architect Gaurav Roy Choudhury, who was inspired by his client’s varied attitude on life, has developed a ‘frame home’ for a nuclear family in Bangalore that is intellectually interesting… This renovation and interior duplex project, which spans 2,600 square feet and is intended for a young couple and their daughter, is based on a bespoke design statement that was conceived in response to a glaring site limitation: there is only one light-facing source that is ‘blocked’ towards the north end of the building! By opening this side and allocating the cut-out to allow a flood of natural light to permeate the house via the double-height dining area, the architects turned this into the epicenter of the home, visually connecting it to the upper level as well. This was a very natural transformation for the architects. The concept of the design is presented as a “frame-within-frame” that softly incorporates the background, yet mysteriously catches the motions and expressions of the members of the family. As one wanders around the home, for example, these frames are imbedded as closets, walls, partitions, windows, nooks, and so on; they overlap or embrace areas as one moves through the house. There is a contrast between the clean and crisp lines of the frames and the earthy appearance of the exposed concrete, kota stone, sandstone, and cement that are utilized in the construction of the frames. The combination of volumetric, spatial, and three-dimensional experiences, along with the interaction of light, transforms each and every composition into a one-of-a-kind, sensory narrative. This is true whether the composition is located in the courtyard, dining area, living room, daughter’s room, master bedroom, audio-visual room, kitchen, or any other room. An intriguing feature of the daughter’s bedroom is that the bottom section of the wall has been transformed into a play space for her, while the upper portion of the wall frames a study nook. Moreover, the color pink is accentuated via the niches, and the treatment of color is employed in a similar manner throughout the house. The remainder of the walls are left neutral, which allows the various frames to articulate an expressive language inside this complex home.
