In order to breathe new life into an architectural legacy that dates back to the previous century, the clairoux design studio remodeled a bungalow in Laval, Canada that was 2850 square feet in size. They did this by employing subtlety and a clean-canvas approach that focuses on lines, volumes, and materials… “A house has life and character, it is something that is continually changing, and as a result, certain design elements will continue to be added over time,” explain designers Julie Lafontaine and Fredric Clairoux of fx Studio Design, who have recently launched their brand for the first time, clairoux. The duo takes great pride in their ability to create picture-perfect styling and deliver high-touch interior design each and every time. Their refined design signature and confident contemporary style are supported by approximately 15 years of design experience, and they are complemented by a rigorous approach to technique and execution. This time around, the challenge consisted of transforming a family home that was constructed in the 1950s into a contemporary residence while preserving the family’s valuable memories (the family has owned the property for fifty years), in a sense, preserving family history; in the garb of an interesting prairie-style “exterior canvas”; and in a contemporary interior that was bespoke to the family. In the beginning, the designers began by restoring the outside of the house to its prairie form. They did this by reproducing horizontal lines and highlighting the natural beauty of the wood. In the next step, they have “exploded” the interior, which was previously a confined and inward-looking location, in order to provide a feeling of space and potential. A floor-to-ceiling window has been installed on the southern side of the exteriors, which has been opened up to the residence. This window covers two levels, allowing for the maximum amount of natural light to enter the home. Located in the center of the living area, the opening in the southeast corner of the room offers a breathtaking view of the stream that is located nearby, thanks to the magnificent natural surroundings! “Light” and “flow” are given careful consideration throughout the interior design, which results in a clean and modern appearance that is characterized by horizontal lines and streamlined volumes. One of the few features that may be considered cumbersome is the natural stone chimney that is located in the enormous center fireplace. The modest design sensibilities highlight the power of merging horizontal lines with contemporary design, with the kitchen serving as a wonderful illustration of this. The rooms are kept clean and basic, and a no-fuss collection of elegant furniture and finishes is used throughout.
