Written by Savitha Hira “vanishing dwellings of India” is a monochrome photographic monologue that provides a glimpse into the history of social architecture and rekindles one’s appreciation for one’s heritage… “vanishing dwellings of India” is a monument to the world that we previously lived in, or more accurately, the one that our forefathers lived in. It was brought to life by the photojournalist T. S. Nagarajan. Using the skilled monochromatic palette of the photographer’s talent, the photographer was able to depict the kinds of lives that the subjects lived, as well as their personal spaces, buildings from the past, clothing sense, and spatial layouts. Nagarajan’s journey of twenty years, traveling throughout the geography of India with his lens constantly exploring and seeking for century-old houses that were still lived in, is obviously a labor of love, and the book is definitely a product of that trip. His documentation does not include any particular time period, architectural style, or other such aspects. Instead, he uses his creative vision to record lyrical compositions of residences that he was able to legally enter and access. The use of natural lighting, chiaroscuro components, deep viewpoints, and a rich history in each and every frame creates a sensory experience for the viewer. A hermitage, a stately house, humble residences in Indian villages, gorgeous palaces, and several other types of homes are among the things that one is likely to come across. “I have recorded their existence not as buildings but as happenings; not as antiques but as affinities,” the photographer explains. “I have documented their presence.” To ensure that we are able to maintain the principles that underpin a long-standing custom, it is imperative that we cultivate their presence within the vibrant modern Indian landscape. And when one scans over and takes a moment to read through this coffee-table magazine, one’s heart does indeed fill with pride in our traditional ways of life and the rich cultural fabric that we have.
