The lack of taste that tomatoes from the grocery store have throughout the winter months is something that I believe all of us are used to encountering. Those of us who live in the northern states, where there is no possibility of more favorable conditions throughout the winter, are forced to make do with the resources that are available to us. In spite of this, we have some optimism that things will improve by the time summer arrives. I made the decision to grow some heritage tomatoes in the spring of 2007. I had packets of cherokee purple and green zebra that I happened to find in the neighborhood. I was completely clueless about what they would be like, what measurements to anticipate for their size, or even how to determine when they were ready to be consumed. Late in the month of May, when I was finally able to plant the young seedlings outside, I also went to a nearby nursery and discovered an additional kind of heritage that is known as old german. Within my herb and tomato bed, I was now able to cultivate three different types of tomatoes that I had never attempted before. Considering that I reside in a rather remote part of the country and that the growing season is quite brief, I believed that planting the seeds in April would be an appropriate time to do so. it turns out that it was not the case. The first frost that we experienced occurred just as my plants had just begun to harvest their fruit. I was still able to get a large number of tomatoes, and for the whole month of September, I had more than enough to consume them three times a day. In the next year, I want to begin planting the seeds in the month of February. It was impossible for me to wait to taste my heirloom tomatoes. As it turned out, the wait was really rather lengthy. In order to blossom and produce fruit at an earlier stage in the season, the heritage types have not been hybridized. It took a considerable amount of time for each of them to reach a stage where they could produce any kind of fruit. Due to the fact that the first time I had some of these tomatoes, I was so ecstatic that I almost fell off my chair in a state of ecstasy, I realized that the wait had been well worth it. There was no doubt that the tastes were outstanding. When it came to the tomatoes themselves, they were stunning to look at. the relics of the Cherokee Purple When it came to actually setting fruit, the Cherokee Purple cultivar was the first to do so. Although I had no notion what to anticipate in terms of size or what color they should be when they were ready, I continued to keep an eye on them. This particular type produced a tomato that was of a medium size and was rather excellent. The outside of the tomato had a pretty dull purple red hue, while the inside was a rich, dark purple red. The taste was warm and delicious, with a flavor that was virtually similar to that of berries. heirlooms of the green zebra Green zebras were the next to produce fruit, but there were not many of them. This variety ended up being a very little tomato when it was harvested. They had a diameter that was comparable to that of the campari tomatoes that are sold in grocery stores, but they were longer and oval in shape. A magnificent brilliant green color was present on the skin, and it included dark green lines and striations. At the point when they had reached their complete maturity, the green skin had a little golden hue. Their interiors were a stunningly vibrant kiwi green hue, and the flavor was unmistakably reminiscent of plums that had reached their full maturity. traditional German heirlooms The ancient German cultivar was the one that produced fruit the least quickly. As the onset of autumn approached and the weather became increasingly unpredictable, I was concerned that I may not get any at all. There were a few that were able to produce fruit and sprout, but in the end, I had to remove them while they were still green so that they could ripen indoors since the frost was becoming too severe for me to keep them outside any longer. In spite of the fact that they were plucked green, they matured beautifully in a window that was exposed to sunlight and yet had an astonishingly rich taste. My only regret is that I did not have the opportunity to sample a vine that had reached its full maturity, but hopefully I will have the chance to do so in the future year. When it comes to taste, I was unable to identify any additional flavor that was present in this kind. It seemed like if these were some of the most delicious tomatoes I could ever imagine. The hue seemed to be just stunning. However, some of them had a pink to red colored blush on the bottom of the tomato, while others had a starburst red pattern on the bottom of the tomato, which continued through on the insides when they were sliced. The majority of them was yellow as they matured. The experience of cultivating and eating these heritage types for the very first time was delightful, and it has made me eager to have the opportunity to do so again. The seeds from these tomatoes were kept, and I am hoping to have a head start on the growing season this coming year. In the event that it is at all feasible, I will attempt to locate other heritage types and continue to educate myself on the tremendous diversity and taste that can be found.
