In a rural community close to the coastal town of Whitby, in northern England, the architect Trevor McIvor chiseled this house into a standout abode by using clean lines, a multi-tiered flat roof, and an appealing composition. The modern house, which has been given the name Petaluma House, is a split-level, open-plan structure that is situated in a neighborhood that is dominated by classic custom homes. Given that the arrangement of the rooms is intended for a retired professional, function and flexibility of space play a significant part in the design of the spaces. This space is accentuated by an elegant open-riser concrete and steel stair that is nestled between the tall vegetation and an indoor waterfall. The entrance features a double-height glazed atrium that is filled with bamboo trees. This atrium allows natural daylight to enter the lower level entertainment and recreation rooms. Due to the fact that the client is a collector of antique automobiles, he required a space in which to preserve his treasures inside an integrated and completely glazed connected vehicle garage that has a view of the ravine that is located in the vicinity. The Petaluma House is outfitted with radiant-in-floor heating and cooling, as well as completed concrete floors across the whole house. The home is flooded with natural light and offers a delightfully cozy environment thanks to the presence of natural ventilation. Within the master bedroom is where you’ll find the master ensuite, which is a spa-like area. This master bedroom has a contemporary design with a very open but natural atmosphere. Taking into consideration the antiquity of the building, a pneumatic see-through elevator shaft has been included into the design.
