As supply chain, procurement, and logistics recruiting professionals who have won several awards, we have been asked a good number of concerns about the future of recruitment after the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union. Despite the fact that we are optimistic about the future, a significant number of recruiters in Scotland do not share our sentiments. Scotland’s recruiters are going through a challenging moment. Putting Brexit apart, the recruiting business in Scotland has been experiencing difficulties for quite some time now. A lack of confidence in the business has been caused by a number of causes, including a candidate pool that is uninterested in the job market, candidates that have unrealistic salary expectations, and a skills pool that is diminishing. A recent article published by a recruiter cited a managing director of a company that places permanent and contract workers in industries such as engineering, construction, and administration. The managing director was quoted as saying that “before the referendum there was an apathy in the Scottish labor market and there still is to a certain extent when it comes to candidates taking certain roles.” Unfortunately, that way of thinking will go on to dominate. Despite the fact that Scottish recruiters are experiencing distress, many of them are of the opinion that the sector is robust enough to prosper, even when the future seems to be unclear. Is Scotland going to make a second attempt to gain its independence? Despite the fact that the United Kingdom chose to leave the European Union by a margin of 52 percent to 48 percent, Scotland voted to stay in the EU by a margin of 62 percent, which may be an indicator that Scotland is planning to pursue independence once again. A referendum on the nation’s independence had previously been conducted in September of 2014, and the results showed that 55.3% of voters wanted to remain in the country. The majority of Scotland’s recruiting organizations exhibit a clear drive to thrive despite the presence of unpredictability in their business environments. As an observer, an operations director for a company that provides temporary and contract staff to the construction industry, described the outcome of the referendum as “something of a surprise and not what we hoped for… the construction industry has been suffering from a skill shortage for a considerable amount of time prior to the referendum, and this result can only add to this.” When new political leaders are in place and when we have a better understanding of what the Brexit result really means for our sector, we will work through this uncertainty and respond appropriately.
